Even in the safest of environments, accidents are inevitable. The educators record any accident or injury in a communication book. Parents will be notified immediately of any injury or accident their child was involved in that requires immediate medical attention,

Typical accidents/ injuries amongst children:

  • Falls indoors or outdoors.
  • Bruising from bumps, other children, etc.
  • Biting
  • Nosebleeds

If a child is involved in an accident or injury that is recorded in the communication book, the parent/guardian will be notified at pickup. Depending on the circumstance, parents may be asked to sign an incident report form.

Certain incidents are considered reportable by the BC child care licensing, examples can be found at http://www.bclaws.ca/Recon/document/ID/freeside/3322007#ScheduleH. If any of these incidents are to occur the academy will report to licensing within 24 hours.

If a reportable incident occurs at the Centre, the staff will complete a reportable incident form as required by Fraser Health and submit it to the licensing office within 24 hours.

Reporting Abuse or Neglect

When an allegation is made concerning the wellbeing of a child that is not in our care at the time of allegation will be reported to the ministry of children and family development. When an allegation concerning a child who is in our care has been made, we will report this to child care licensing. Following these events the childcare will document disclosure, observations, or allegations in a communication book and/or incident report.

Missing and Wandering Children

In the event a child becomes missing during class time, staff will stay calm and make sure the remaining children stay together. The childcare will immediately notify the police and give them a detailed description of the child. The staff will notify the parents/ guardian of the incident and the steps that are being taken to locate their child.

Unauthorized Pickup

If an unauthorized person comes to pick up a child, the adult will be informed that without written consent you cannot release the child to them, and the parents/ legal guardians will.

need to be notified.

We will attempt to call the parent to confirm the pick-up if the authorized person claims to have been sent by the parent. Information about this person, including name, address, phone number, and relationship to the child, would need to be verified by the parent. We would record any information provided between the parent and the unauthorized person and request confirmation from the unauthorized person (Photo ID). The child will not be released if a parent or legal guardian cannot be reached.

In the event of a non-complying person, we will take note of the physical appearance of the adult, the make & model of their vehicle and the license plate number and immediately call 911 upon their departure. Parents will also be contacted along with the Ministry of Children and Family Development within 24 hours.

Impaired Authorized Pick up

If an authorized person comes to pick up a child, but we do not feel the adult is emotionally, physically or mentally stable (intoxicated), and that they cannot provide safe care for the child, we will not release the child.

Offer to call another contact to pick up the child (relative, friend, etc.): Educators will call the emergency contact person in the child’s file if the parent/guardian accepts this alternative.

inform the parents that if they choose to drive with the child, we will be obligated to call the police.

  •  Ensure the incident is properly documented and reported to the Ministry of

Children and Family development

In any situation where staff members alert parents of a child’s behavior, they have a conversation with the parents about the occurrence and work to see if there is a pattern to the behavior and how to best address it in a constructive, supportive way.

1. Staff members will advise parents of any necessary local resources for professional support.

2. If all available local resources have been used and the behavior of the child keeps putting at risk both it and the children around it, the parents may be asked to remove the kid from the daycare immediately, and the care may be terminated with notice.
